What is GATE?

  • The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board – GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), and Government of India.

 

GATE Test Conduction

  • GATE is generally conducted on the Saturday and Sunday of Early February every year and the results announced in the middle of March.

 

How to apply for GATE?

  • There is only one way by which candidates can apply for GATE examination – Online GATE

 

Examination Structure

A candidate can apply for ONE/TWO of the 30 papers

  • The candidate is expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of his/her qualifying degree.
  • The candidate is; however, free to choose any paper according to his/her admission plan, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in which he/she wishes to seek admission.

Marking Scheme Questions carry 1 mark or 2 marks
Negative Marking For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be negative marking.
For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
For a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
There is no negative marking for wrong answer(s) to MSQ or NAT questions.
There is no partial marking in MSQ.

How GATE score is calculated?

GATE exam score will be calculated using the formula

Marks obtained by the candidate

is the qualifying marks for general category candidate in the paper

is the mean of marks of top 0.1% or top 10 (whichever is larger) of the candidate who appeared in the paper

The maximum score can be attained is 1000.

  • The evaluation of the ORS is carried out by a computerized process using scanning machines, with utmost care. Requests for revaluation of the answer script and re-totaling of marks will not be entertained.
  • GATE score card is valid for 3 years.

 

 

 

 

 

GATE Eligibility

  • Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture (4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Architecture (Post-B.Sc./Post-Diploma) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master’s degree program (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology.
  • Candidates in the fourth or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master’s degree program or Dual Degree program in Engineering/Technology.
  • Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by Institute of Engineers (India); AMICE by Institute of Civil Engineers (India)) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

PSU/ Government Jobs – Direct calls

  • NTPC, BHEL, BARC, IOCL, Power Grid calls for interview based on GATE score, In future most of the PSUs companies will consider GATE score for recruitment

Government Sector Jobs entrance exams

  • DRDO, ONGC, SAIL, BSNL-JTO, HAL, NAL, HPCL etc – more than 10,000 vacancies, Syllabus is subset of GATE syllabus. Hence GATE preparation enough to crack these exams. Higher Technical Education- ME, MTech, MS & PhD

  • HSc, HTs, NITs, Central University, Govt. Colleges, Private colleges more than 10,000 seats,
  • For Master’s, The GATE scholarship amount is a monthly stipend of Rs. 12,400. This amount is provided to the successful candidates for a period of 24 months, or until the completion of their chosen course. The duration of the scholarship, therefore, depends on the length of the course.
  • A monthly stipend of INR 25,000 for up to 2 years is provided to Ph. D. students. For the next 2 years, the financial assistance is raised by INR 3,000

A candidate is allowed to appear either in ONE or UP TO TWO test papers. Please see the page Two-Paper Combination for more details.

The test papers will be in English. Each GATE 2024 paper is for a total of 100 marks, General Aptitude (GA) is common for all papers (15 marks), and the rest of the paper covers the respective test paper syllabus (85 marks). Click here for detailed pattern of the question papers.

Multi-sessional papers: Candidate will be assigned to appear only in one of the sessions for the papers running in multiple sessions.

Candidates must familiarize themselves with the paper code as it is required both during application and examination.

Each candidate should fill ONLY ONE application. If they wish to appear in second paper (from the two-paper combination), they can add respective paper in their original application. In case of Multiple applications, only one will be accepted and remaining applications will be rejected without any refund for the paid fee.
